I first read Octavia E. Butler in a graduate school class about women's utopian and dystopian fiction, along with works by Marge Piercy and Doris Lessing. She was totally unique and a visionary. Thank you for a great tribute site to a wonderful woman and extraordinary writer.

I took an African American Literature class at the university - that is how I found Octavia Butler. In that class I read Kindred and I got hooked. Now I own most of her books and read many of them. I try to read slowly because I fear the moment when I can say I read them all...

I read Fledgling because I was on a vampire kick. How can more people I know not have heard of Octavia Butler?!? I am dumbfounded that it took me so long to find her. I have been an avid reader of sci fi and fantasy since my teens (now I'm in my 30's) and have been reading Butler for the past 3 months. She is an amazing writer. What will I do when I finish the books I have left? There is no one like her that I know of to read...

your note:
I was in the bookstore a few weeks ago and decided to pick up another Octavia Butler book. I read the back flap of Fledgeling only to have my heart drop through my stomach. In the 4 years since I had read the Parable of the Sower, one of my favorite writers had died! I started tearing up right there. I have never connected on so many levels with a writer, and was profoundly saddened to hear she died in 2006. I gave birth to my second daughter that year and hadn't been able to read for years
