Thank you! |
by Georg N., Washington, DC
She had a presence that was more Ananyu than anything else,
with a deep sonorous voice that whispered from a place
that you felt like you remembered that knew you once knew but had forgotten.
So let me tell you what I had in my archive.
I met her writing through Harlan Ellison, a science fiction writer who said she was one of the best writers he had ever read.
Harlan Ellison was a science fiction writer and bon vivant in the 60s.
He was a darling of hollywood and a screen writer and editor.
The first book of hers that I read was Dawn.
It stayed with me.
She has an acute sharp ability to write about psychological issues
through the lens of speculative fiction and science fiction.
She was a recluse. Essence did an article on her, when I was about
20 something. My Grand Aunt had all of her books and we often
spoke about her vision of the way we interact as people.

Re: Fledgling....Could Someone Please Write A Sequel
Is there anyone, within the literary world, willing to write a sequel to "Fledgling?"
I can't get Shori and the Ina out of my mind. I wish, truly wish, there was someone who could pick up where Octavia Butler left off.
Maybe an anynomous group could hold a sience and invite Octavia's spirit to possess a would-be writer...and inspire her/him to continue Butler's work.
I mean, there's got to be a way to continue Shori's story and open the world of the Ina. That stuff was just fascinating to read, and to realize that there may never be sequel is like mourning Octavia Butler all over again.
Please, someone, WRITE a sequel. I want more shori and Ina, and Syms. I want to know if she'll be able to mate with Daniel or if something will happen to off-track those plans. I want to know if her syms will live long enough to see her become a formidable alley.
AND I want to know what she is going to look like when she finally matures at 70. Will she be short like Katherine Dahlman or a statesque, 6' foot, dark beauty with lovely (haunting) eyes. And will the Silks continue to undermine Shori's struggle to rebuild the Matthews family. What will she learn during her travels and what female Ina will she adopt? Why does Shori think she can help Daniel, an Ina, heal faster? And the questions go on and on....
So I'm begging.....if there is anyone out there...any writer who can continue Shori's story and give life to a story that was (quite honestly) cut way too short....PLEASE write it.
Harlan Ellison

I admire a lot the work of the 60-70s authors they was plenty of originality and a lot of imagination, the actual writers are not than good for my likes.
